New Construction Gets Custom
Westfield, NJ · Major Interior Renovation

Before
The Home
A recently built new-construction house in Westfield. The homeowners loved its location, layout and architectural bones — but the original finishes and interiors were generic, the way a well-built spec house often is, and had no relationship to how they wanted to live.
Client Goal
Not a finish update. The homeowners wanted the house elevated into a layered, cohesive residence that reflected their art-loving, expressive style, with strong architectural moments and rooms that worked for both everyday living and entertaining.
Solution
A strategic renovation of key areas rather than a gut of the whole house: custom millwork, elevated materials and full-service interior design applied where they would change the experience most. This is the case for renovating good new construction — the bones were right, so the work went into character.
Construction
MRC completed a gut renovation of the spacious primary bathroom and the powder room. Custom cabinetry, built-ins, archways and a tailored home bar were built in through the rest of the house, adding architectural moments the original build did not have.
Design
Ellie Mroz Design's construction consulting team developed the concept, elevations, finish selections and architectural direction for the bathrooms; its furnishings team layered the rest with curated furniture, textures, statement lighting and distinctive wallpaper. Each room was given its own personality while staying connected to the whole — collected and artistic without losing comfort.
Result
A house that is beautiful enough for hosting and comfortable enough for ordinary family evenings. The custom cabinetry, built-ins and home bar give function and visual interest in the same move, and the interiors now read as the homeowners' own rather than as a builder's specification.
